Persian International Film Festival, is an independent festival managed by Palangi Productions. The idea for this festival blossomed from a gap in the Australian society. For many, today, the term Persian is associated with a historic empire or with Orientalist visions of harems, protestors and veiled women, or simply reduced to a linguistic discourse.  The complexities of the Persian culture and heritage are often overlooked. The aim of this festival is to challenge the perceptions that exist about the term Persian in the world today through a visual culture. When we use the term Persian here, we refer specifically to the cultures of Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan today where most people still share very specific cultural and social traits, many of whom still communicate in the Persian language.

Persian International Film Festival aims to bring together films that represent the diversities, and similarities of the Persian culture and heritage from those of Persian background from Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan and from their respective communities across the globe.

 
 

JUDGES 2012

 


Maani Petgar is an Iranian filmmaker, photographer and film critic. He divides his time between Australia and Iran, and manages Reverse Angle Productions in Australia and Unexposed Films in Iran.


Michelle Langford is a lecturer of film studies at the University of New South Wales with a special interest in Iranian and German cinemas.



Nasser Palangi is an Iranian-Australian artist and critique. He is one of Iran’s most renowned contemporary painters and has exhibited in various countries across Asia, Africa, and Europe.

 


Seifollah Samadian is an Iranian photographer, filmmaker, and the publisher and editor in chief of Tasvir Magazine in Iran. He has exhibited his photographs and screened his films internationally in various galleries and museums.

 


Yalda Hakim is an Afghan-Australian journalist for SBS’s highly acclaimed Dateline series.
